His Holiness the 17th KARMAPA visit to North America

The Latest News:

Shambhala International welcomes the visit to North America of His Holiness Urgen Trinley Dorje, the Gyalwang Karmapa XVII.

The 18-day tour of His Holiness will take place from 15 May to 2 June 2008, and will include visits to New York, Boulder, and Seattle.

His Holiness will first arrive in New York for public events and will teach at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in Woodstock, New York state, the seat of His Holiness in North America.

From New York he will fly to Colorado. His Holiness will give a public talk, and also address the many hosting sanghas in Boulder on 24-25 May. The tour will conclude in Seattle, where he will give public teachings prior to returning to India on 2 June.

Planning for the visit has been underway for some time, coordinated in North America by The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. Many members of the Shambhala community from around the country are involved with the planning for the tour, including the support of the Dorje Kasung, finances, and logistics.

In early March 2007, the Sakyong, Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche, sent a personal letter to the Karmapa expressing his delight at the news that a visit might be possible. He extended a warm welcome to His Holiness and invited him to visit. The Sakyong's handwritten letter was delivered to the Karmapa by Shambhala President Richard Reoch at a private audience in Gyuto Monastery, near Dharamsala, India, on 5 March 2007.

His Holiness thanked President Reoch for the Sakyong's invitation and expressed the wish to visit the stupa which holds the funeral relics of the Vidyadhara, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. However, due to the extremely short duration of this tour, the visit to Colorado will take place in Boulder. His Holiness will visit the stupa on a future tour of North America.

How Can We Deal with Everyday Distractions? Karmapa on YouTube

In this YouTube video excerpted from a teaching given at Gyuto Tantric University in Northern India, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa explains how the root of attachment that seems to pull us towards external objects and distractions lies not in the objects themselves but in our own minds. We therefore have the power to tame our distractions and work with our own attachment.  View the clip to watch His Holiness's teaching.
